![]() Shielding methods maintain improved suppression characteristics to 1GHz and above. It can be seen that the filters conventionally mounted exhibit a drop in attenuation at higher frequencies. Although, DM EMI is so important for any power converter, the effect of DM filter is not investigated in detail in literature with respect to control characteristics and DM noise reduction. The following insertion loss curves based on actual measurements, show the effect. In this paper, DM EMI filters including LC, LC with damping, and Pi and LCL filters are designed for DC-DC Cuk converter operated in BCM. This greatly improves the screening between filter input and output, thereby enhancing the high frequency response. This application note describes how to build a 5th order low pass, high pass Butterworth. Whilst SBSG, SBSM and SBSP filters can be mounted conventionally on PCBs, they are also suitable for mounting in a wall or partition on a board. The filter we’re designing is simple enough, a 5th-order Bessel filter, and the software is the easy-to-use QUCS package on an Ubuntu Linux. Solder connections made to each end (signal lines) and each side band (earth track). Impedance Matching Filter Circuit Design LC, L and PI Filters. The idealised graph produced by QUCS for our filter. Design a Pi network to match a 50 source to a 500 load. Example 6.6.1: Three-Element Matching Network Design. Given RS, RL, and Q, the above equation yields the value of RV. ‘C’ and ‘Pi’ filters are mounted to PCBs and soldered in identical manner to chip capacitors. As a useful design approximation, the loaded Q of the Pi network can be taken as the Q of the L section with the highest Q: Q max(RS, RL) RV 1. Effects of mounting method on Insertion Loss It is therefore important to test the filters in circuit to determine the performance level achieved. The effect of the board makes it difficult to directly compare parts unless the mounting details are defined. All measurements are taken using a Vector Network Analyser in a 50Ω system, no load. It is important to recognise that the board material, thickness and layout, the plating finish, the grounding efficiency and the circuit impedances will all have an effect on the actual performance of the filter in operation. The boards are mounted to brass support jigs for mechanical stability and electrical grounding. Its not a rule, but a bit of common sense, because if the I/O impedances are low and youre using a lowpass, the capacitors will be of little help, whereas the series inductors will contribute more. Solder pads are ‘T’ bar with respect to the track and dimensionally match the recommendations given. T types are preferred when the I/O impedances are low, while filters are preferred for high I/O impedances. Insertion loss plots and figures supplied are typical only and are measured on 50Ω stripline open boards, 0.8mm thick FR4 with gold plated tracks.
